Back from vacation

Just returned from Florida. edarc and I spent the weekend in Orlando with smtpboy and rysar. We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando thanks to smtpboy's Hilton points.

Had a great time. The weather on Friday was perfect - perfectly miserable, yet we managed to have a really good time running around the Magic Kingdom and going to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. Of course, as luck would have it, the weather was getting progressively better as our trip went on and starting today they were expecting highs in the 80's. That makes perfect sense since we left yesterday. We managed to hit the high spots of each theme park over the 4 days we were there. So much more to do - though, I suspect that if I never hear the Boston Pops version of Sleigh Ride again I would die a happy man.

edarc hadn't been to Disney World in a long time (and never as an adult) and I really hope he had a good time running around with a bunch of Disney geeks. I was rather concerned about that before we left -- tho I believe he ended up having an enjoyable trip.

I do have some issues that need to be discussed with AirTran regarding the flights to Orlando, in particular. I think an old-fashioned letter to them will suffice.

Now -- why isn't it as warm here as it was in Florida yesterday?

I has a Google

Well, I finally upgraded my phone. I know what you're thinking -- welcome to the 2000's. :)

I picked up a HTC Hero on Sprint this past week with all its Android coolness. Since then I have been working at a feverish pace to finish off selling my soul to Google. Everything is sync'd up to Google. Since I keep all my contacts in my OSX address book, now I sync that to the Googles. I also configured Gmail to be the mail exchanger for my domain name. The second part -- yeah, should have done that years ago.

Guess I'll need a twitter account now.

;)

X-Ray vison

Yesterday I had my third visit to the Orthopedic since I returned to VA after my ice hockey "incident" in Long Island.

I managed to get a couple of the X-rays from the doctor. Excuse the image quality, this is a scan of a printout from a laser printer that seems it could use a new toner cartridge. Regardless, it's still pretty clear.

There is a single screw in the Tibia and a plate and 6 screws in the Fibula. The doctor said that for the most part my bones are healed and I really wouldn't be able to notice any fractures or remnants in these images. So, all in all, it looks like my recovery is progressing along rather nicely.

I fail at IKEA

So this evening I went to assemble a new bookcase I picked up at IKEA this weekend. Upon opening the box I determined that I have picked up the wrong color/veneer. This makes the second time in as many weeks that I've picked up the wrong color item in the warehouse at the big blue and yellow store. Complicating the matters -- the closest IKEA is 2 hours away. *grumble*

Orthopedic Update

Well, I've been home for about a week now. Came home last Tuesday via Amtrak out of NYC. Had an appointment on Thursday with my PCP who scheduled me to go see a local orthopedic today.

First and foremost, they removed the surgical staples from both my incisions today. I had 6 on my inside (Tibia) incision and 17 on my outside (Fibula) incision. Aside from a couple of them being pretty sharply painful when they were being removed... I was very happy to see them go. For the last 5 or so days they've been steadily getting more and more annoying. Both itchy and painful. I also had new X-ray images taken today since I didn't have any with me from the (cheap and expensive) orthopedic in NY. The doc said after looking over the images that things looked really good. He pretty much echoed what my surgeon had said up in NY at the follow-up appointment I had last Monday. He said the the bones were mated together very nicely by way of the surgery. Based on what he saw, he was hopeful that my recovery time would be a little shorter than normal for typical Tib-Fib fractures. Considering the fact that I was in very good shape aside from the injury that all meant good things for the recovery time.

Still I can't put weight on this foot for at least another 4-5 weeks. My leg muscles should be good and gone by then -- so that's going to make for some "enjoyable" recovery time at the Therapist and the gym. Speaking of that. I had called the gym last week to put my membership on suspension during this recovery time. Seeing as how I'm about ready to lose my mind I may call them back up in a week or two and see about reactivating my membership and going up to see a trainer and start working on an upper body/core regimen to keep myself in some better shape instead of being completely sedentary the entire recovery time. That should help me feel better about looking the part to go to Chicago in November. We shall see.

All-in-all, aside from there being a whole month more of basically not doing much of anything -- I suppose this prognosis is just about as good as it could be. Hopefully I'll be able to get back on the bike later this fall before it gets to be too cold to ride around here. And if all goes well, I should be able to go skating again sometime around December or January. *fingers crossed*

I are broken

Last weekend edarc and myself came up to NY to visit with reddywhp and rocketpup. Drove up on Thursday night and had planned to stay until sometime on Sunday afternoon. We could then drive back to VA and avoid most of the Washington traffic. We had a good time while we where here. Friday we went played around the house abit and went ice skating at night joined by nitropup. Afterwards we went over to a sports bar and grabbed some Guinness! Well, at least I got Guinness. :)

Saturday nipper_dawg joined reddywhp, rocketpup, edarc and myself and we headed over to Cherry Grove on Fire Island. We laid out on the beach and enjoyed the sun and enjoyed the scenery and the adult beverages. Saturday evening we were pretty beat upon returning to the house -- so we pretty much crashed.

Sunday morning we slept in but was up in enough time to head over to The Rinx for a Stick and Puck. Unfortunately, this is were the weekend took a bit of a downward spiral. We got all geared up and headed out onto the ice. Edarc hadn't ever been to a stick and puck before so I, still being pretty green myself, headed off with him to try to teach him some passing drills. After about 5 minutes of this he passed me a puck that went off to my right side. I skated out and turned to go fetch it and apparently my skate got caught on the ice in some manner or I got tripped up on it and while my left foot was turned outward my weight came down on my left leg. I fell to the ice and didn't move for a bit accessing my condition. I knew something was wrong because I could feel the crunch of bones in my left leg as slightly moved my foot. Assessment complete, I rolled over and crawled on all fours to the bench. I wasn't in too much pain but knew that I couldn't put weight on the foot. Unfortunately, not being in too much pain would prove problematic at the hospital later on.

Skipping forward, we tried to decide whether we should just go on home Sunday night or go on into the hospital to have my leg checked out. Obviously I opted for the latter. We went to the hospital and based on the fact that I wasn't in too much pain the hospital assumed initially that I had a fracture in one of the bones in my leg. Normally people that come in with the injury that I later found out I had are, apparently, screaming in pain. Considering the lack of pain I was having, they put me in "Fast Track" (read ER urgent care aka Doc-In-A-Box) After a long wait in the waiting room I was called back for an X-Ray. Shortly after the X-Ray I was moved from Fast Track to the "Main Procedure Room." Having now determined that I had fractured both my Tibia and Fibula in my left leg they were going to admit me into the hospital for surgery. This injury is considered "unstable" since it involved the weight bearing bone in my leg.

I sent edarc and rocket home after we determined what was to happen next. Edarc drove my car home to VA on Monday morning while I was laid up in the hospital. I had surgery on Monday night to install a screw in my Tibia and a plate and 6 screws into my Fibula. When I got called up to the Operating Room on Monday night apparently someone came into the ER and needed emergency surgery. They then took most of the surgical team that was going to be working on me and moved them to this new patient. So I had to wait for a bit in the OR prep room while they put together a new surgical team for me. While there I got to talk with many of the new team members that were making their way in to perform my surgery. It was pretty cool because many (if not all) of them were pretty cool. We joked about for a while as we waited.

I ended up staying in the hospital until Wednesday afternoon. I had right many visitors while I was in the hospital which I am very thankful for. When my family found out that I was going to be hospitalized in NY, I think their first thought was that I would be alone. They really don't know how many friends I have up here - I'm thankful for all of them - love you all!

Reddy and Rocket have been taking care of me since I left the hospital. I'm not sure how I'll pay them back for this, but I know I will be forever grateful. I really dislike being "helpless" and I even more hate being any form of a burden on anyone. I am thankful for those that smack me when I say this and disregard those concerns I have. I am to stay here until this Tuesday when I'll be taking Amtrak back to Richmond. I have a follow-up appointment with my surgeon on Monday morning.

Recovery time could take as long as 8 weeks for the bones to heal. Perhaps less since I had screws installed. Either way, I am going to end up being pretty boring for the next two months. Fortunately I'll have Edarc at the house to help me and my family is really close by. I am in a cast now and cannot put any weight on my left foot. With the screws they may be able to put me in a walking cast sooner than normal. We'll see. The doc says I'm in really good shape and the bones look really good - I hope that bodes well. Also the fractures are above the ankle (above the hockey boot line) and occurred in the bones themselves. So the ankle/joint doesn't appear to have been adversely affected. So I just have to wait for the bones to heal. Hopefully these next two months will pass quickly. I'm going to miss out on motorcycling, skating, and hockey during this time. :( Too bad it isn't hockey season -- I'd have something to watch on TV.

Wow. Long post. Send me some messages -- I'll likely have time to respond. Or come visit. :)

New iMac - New Second Life

I mentioned a couple posts back that I had purchased a new iMac. I have been really happy with the machine thus far. Really fast machine, excellent graphics and it runs Virtual Machines without the slightest bit of lag. Overall, I'm very impressed with Apple's new offering. Really looking forward to Snow Leopard where I can take advantage of some of the GPU power for more than just graphics. That being said, I really didn't have anything on my computer to test out the new NVIDIA graphics card. babysprout convinced me to try out Second Life, if for nothing else, to see the new computer and graphics card in action. After a fair amount of trying to convince me to join, I gave in.

So in Second Life, my name is Nicklas Beornssen. Sprout has been showing me around and what I've learned thus far is that a lot of expense for newbies in SL is the purchasing of things to customize their avatar. I admit, I'm guilty here too. So far it's been pretty fun and interesting. I've met some pretty cool people thus far and suspect that will continue.

Sprout is also a vampire in the SL game Bloodlines. Seems like right much fun, so last night I gave my soul, err.. *ahem* Sprout took my soul. ;) *hugz Sprout* I am still a human, but likely in the near future I'll be joining the ranks of the immortal. *EG*

New Toys!

Considering the current condition of the economy I figured that I should do my part to help out. As a result, I have finally broken down and purchased:

An Apple iMac 24"!

And from the UK, I ordered something that I'd been wanting for quite a while. It was on closeout, so I think I got a pretty good deal on it. rocketpup agreed to play courier for this one.

A Roof Boxer V in white with a tinted visor!

I'll have to wait until next month to get my hand on the Boxer when Rocket returns from the other side of the pond. *excited*

My apologies for not mentioning it yesterday on the actual day.

During these cold, short days of the year, I hope that the love and company of family and friends will see you through till the bright, warm days of spring return. May this time of reflection and introspection bring new found knowledge and understanding to you and yours.

Happy Holidays, Friends!
